"The self-adhesive NBR insulation cuts a real amount of time off every joint we install. Less trimming, less taping, and a finish our clients actually notice."
"We've used 227 Enterprise's NBR insulation across several VRF retrofit projects where condensation had been a recurring complaint. Since switching, that complaint has essentially disappeared."
NBR — nitrile butadiene rubber — is a flexible closed-cell foam that has become a standard choice for HVAC and refrigeration piping — and on VRF/VRV systems in particular, it does so by accomplishing two things well: reducing unwanted heat transfer and preventing condensation on cold refrigerant lines. Not stiff, but flexible, it goes around copper Y joints, reducers, and branch connections, not leaving gaps at every bend, so the insulation stays continuous over the whole piping run instead of breaking anywhere the geometry gets tricky.
The simplest case is a length of copper tubing straight. A VRF Y branch joint is not. It's curves, several branches and pipe sizes changing just where the insulation has to stay on operating. And that’s where flexible NBR is the big winner. It conforms to the real shape of the joint instead of creating gaps and thermal bridges at each transition. And that’s precisely why we fit it tightly around VRF branch joints. That’s what gives you genuine condensation control, a cleaner install and a seam that blends seamlessly into the insulation on the adjacent pipe, rather than standing out like an obvious patch job.
AP Armaflex-grade NBR insulation with an ASTM E84 rating of 25/50, i.e., a flame-spread index of 25 or less and a smoke-developed index of 50 or less under ASTM E84 testing. And that’s the real standard most HVAC specs call for when surface-burning features are a need, not simply a nice-to-have. That said, fire codes differ by project and by jurisdiction, so it’s worth clarifying the precise requirement and the matching certification before you lock in the selection.
The closed-cell structure is the thing that makes this work. It doesn't allow the transmission of water vapor, so damp air never gets to the cold copper surface underneath in the first place. Insulation, however, only works if the details are good: the precise thickness for the application, and every seam, joint and termination properly sealed. Get it right and the outer surface stays above dew point, which is what truly stops condensation, leaking and moisture buildup around VRF joints and pipework, not the material itself.
The insulation at 227 Enterprise is designed around the junction and not as a separate site item. Our NBR insulation solutions are engineered to fit accurately around complex VRF/VRV copper joint profiles, providing consistent coverage and reducing the need for excessive cutting and modification during installation. We can provide you with entire insulated copper branch solutions, based on system drawings and project specifications, utilizing AP Armaflex-grade NBR insulation rated ASTM E84 25/50, along with OEM-customized dimensions and insulation configurations.
